Never mind Lewis Hamilton, just try and catch
up with Lucy Fur! //
2007 has seen you go from 'strength to strength' as the 'ol corporate buzz saying goes, with 2 big notches on the gun handle in the form of getting signed to Red Management and playing your first Tidy Weekender, woo hoo! Tell us how you came to land a slot on the Red 'Premier League' Roster?
If i'm honest I had probably dreamed about it so much then when it happened I still could'nt believe it! The whole RED roster are all my hard house heroes so to be working alongside them now is a bit mad. I have always had a good relationship with Red's leading lady Kate Hammond, and she had been monitoring my career for the last year or so. I guess she felt now is the time to take me to the next level, and inject a bit of femme fatale into the rosta. This came at the best time and just tells me I am still doing something right!
Getting to play at a Tidy Weekender is probably any hard dj's dream gig. I know it must have been for you, so tell us, how was your first time?
I had the journey from hell getting to Wales. I live in Kent, about 30 minutes drive from Dover and due to roadworks, traffic, crashes etc.. a 4 hour journey took nearly 8! I remember it being 8.30pm still in the security queue at the front gate and thinking 'I am really running out of time!' I honestly did't think I was going to make it. But, it was worth the stress when I eventually got there-Tidy was so much fun. It was fantastic being booked to play my sound too. And, as I was opening the Vicious Circle Vs Storm Arena, I had a really important part to play for the night to flow. I loved it! I went with groovy, funky but tough hard house and it worked well. As I was on first I really was'nt sure how busy it would be, but by the 2nd or 3rd track in, it had got really busy! The beauty of that night too was that I could have a few drinks afterwards with everyone, as I usually play late! It was a set I wont forget for a while thats for sure- especially seeing Red management cheering me on at the front of the stage.
But of course, Weekenders aren't just about the music, they're about the party, the party people and the 3 days of madness! Have you been to a Weekender before? If so have you a favorite random Weekender moment to share with us?
I have been to about 4 whole weekenders I think- my last full one I went with Tara Reynolds before she left for Australia. That was a very memorable weekend, and I will never forget what she did for me as an up and coming DJ. I am not sure if I have a favourite random moment, but there is one from the one just gone! Remember I said I got to the venue really late? Well when I got to the challet, it had no electric so I had to go and knock on someones door and ask if they would mind if I came in and did my hair! How embarrasing! I just did'nt have the time to mess around going back to reception to get electric! And the funniest part was my best mate was trying to explain to some clearly past it clubbers that I was on at ten, and who I was, they were like 'who?'
You've stayed true to what I'd call proper hardhouse music, and your sets reflect that with great tune selection and energy from start to finish. So what music, producers, have kept you inspired and turned on over the last year?
Musically I have listened to a lot of funky house this year and I really like dirty electro. My favourite alternative to hard house has got to be Drum & Bass. Amazing, really interesting dirty tracks! This does influence my productions and tune selection in my sets I would say. Producers this year for me have been Tom Parr, Paul Maddox, Nik Denton, Amp Attack and Riggsy. They deliver every time. There has been some fantastic tracks out this year and forthcoming from this lot.
On the studio note, I've heard your latest tune, Shake it Up, produced by Studio Man of the Moment Mr.Paul Maddox, and it's a corker! Well done, I can't wait to have a dance to it at Storm on Saturday! Are you doing more with Paul or anyone else in the New Year that you can tell us about?
I will 100% be doing more with Paul in 2008. Our first session together came together so easily it was silly! I have a lot of respect for Paul. He played me some of his alternative productions within different genres and he is a very talented young man. And, he has so much more up his sleeve that next year is going to be another corker for him. The early part of next year will see me producing with Nik Denton. We are both very excited about this but I won't give too much away now!
Who, when and what happened, inspired you to say 'I want to be a dj'?
Well when I first started clubbing for me, it was all about Lisa Lashes and Andy Farley. Both really inspired me back in the early 2000's. Lisa for her pure 'im a female dj getting out there' aura and Andy for his tunes/mixing. I watched Andy for hours! Incredible to watch. Then it was the classic 'you can't do that' scenerio quoted by an ex boyfriend who at the time thought he was amazing at dj'ing (he never got anywhere with it!), so I thought I bloody can and I will! And then I discovered Paul Glazby and never looked back. My whole dj career since playing out has been influenced by him, from sticking to your style to making yourself heard. It has been hard work but I am finally getting there now!
Currently there seems to be a shortfall of hardhouse girls on the decks compared to other years. So is there anyone on the girls team you feel the rest of us should be keeping an eye out for in 2008?
I am not sure where they all went because at one time, there were lots of females coming through. One to watch next year will be K8-e. She has really impressed me this year with her professionalism and musical attitude. She can play every type of hard house, nu nrg and techno well and knows when to do it. In my opinion she does not get the recognision she deserves so here's to K8-e!
Along with playing at TW12 and getting signed to Red, what where a couple of HIGH points of 2007 and what made you cringe with embarrassment or disgust?
The highlight of this year has got to be marrying my long time boyfriend. I had had my decks for 6 months when we met and he has been my rock throughout everything. We have had a really good year. I am sure there are things that have made me cringe but I can't think of any at the moment- I will come back to you!
Any dj that's been moving up the ranks on merit like you have must have some 'pro tips' on performing, preparation and professionalism that younger dj's would pay top dollar for. What are some that you live by?
What a tough question. I do feel these days that people will do anything to get in the spotlight. Fair play to those who do well overnight, it's just not happended for me that way. I would much rather my career has built how it has, and that I do now have respect from the big boys. Let the music do the talking- this is such a true statement. Believe in yourself and have lots of patience. Chase bookings with persistance but not annoyance, and wait to be asked. I am probably mumbling a bit but do agree with the above!
Lucy, when your not playing and doing the dj thing, what non-music leisure activities are top of your list at the moment?
I am a massive film addict. I am currently trying to collect every Adam Sandler film on DVD as these are so my sense of humour! Very into the dinner party thing at the moment too. My house is still being decorated so I keep being invited to other people's houses. But top of the agenda, is travelling. I am going to Brussels and New York in December, I have a trip to Kenya booked for next year and also want to squeeze in Dubai to visit my other best mate, Portugal to see the Grandparents and Ibiza for a certain Tidy girl's henparty!
And lastly, where are you from and who do you support!
I am not into football, prefer F1. But maybe stating the obvious, lets go with I'm from England and that's who I support!
